How much do you care if Floyd and Manny fight, and for how long?
A Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Manny Pacquio fight has been the most anticipated and talked about contest since Mickey Ward vs Arturo Gatti 2 or Erik Morales vs Antonio Barrera 2. Why didn’t it happen? This question can be answered in many ways by many people: One of the fighters are scared, the hate between promotion companies, Prima donna fighters, agreement on drug tests, etc. The true answer is, there really is no one answer. We all know boxing is political in nature, and a lot of people have a lot at stake over a fight of this magnitude, so everything has to be right. Whatever the case may be, how long will this anticipation last? How long before the fight fans turn their back on this fight like they did the Bernard Hopkins vs Roy Jones Jr rematch?
I was one of the enthusiastic fight fans that knew this fight would be epic, but smart enough to know that it would be a blood bath during negotiations. When all the turbulence started to happen, I was already holding on to my arm rests with my headset on blaring music, so I would not be fooled with the entire ping pong like allegations and reasons. After I realized all the mayhem was not subsiding, I had to take a closer look at what was really going on without being sucked into all the hoopla, which was hard because this sport brings out emotions in its customers.
What I found was a crisis that was spiraling out of control with no evident solution. Reporters are saying that boxing needs this fight, and if it doesn’t happen it would somehow damage the sport. It might have seemed that way in the beginning, but we’ve had so many great fights during this fiasco that it makes that statement erroneous. With the threat of the battle being needed no longer looming, why would the fans care as much? They don’t!

Both fighters show signs of deterioration and will continue as the months go on. Floyd just served time in jail and hasn’t fought since, and the cyborg was seen as a mere mortal against Miguel Cotto in their May 5th fight before he got incarcerated. The warrior Manny Pacquio has dished out far less entertaining fights that got him to his now faded P4P status. To add insult to injury, Manny stands a good chance to actually lose to Juan Manuel Marquez this December in their 4th fight, which would further damage his creditability. No one believes that Pacquio lost to Bradley, but it adds to the decrease in his significance.
I’m an optimistic person and hope that this fight will happen sometime in 2013 and we will all rejoice and come together on that particular Saturday night with popcorn and drinks. Maybe the undercards will consist of: Brandon Rios vs Yuriorkis Gamboa, Andre Ward vs Sergio Martinez, Timothy Bradley vs Miguel Cotto, Danny Garcia vs Robert Guerrero, and, why not, Wladimir Klitschko vs Vitali Klitschko.
I know, you would have to be foolish to think there would ever be a stacked card with exciting fights of this caliber, all are fights I believe would be great and need to be made, but how far are you from this insanity if you are still sitting hoping for this fight?
I think this fight is nearly dead and almost pointless, and unfortunately for all of us, I would not be shocked if the Floyd and Manny fight doesn’t happen until both fighters are on their way out of the sport. Hopefully I’m wrong, but there’s nothing that says I am!
