If Anthony Joshua Fights Jake Paul, Is It career Suicide?
There are talks about a potential match between former champ Anthony Joshua (28W-4L-0D 25KO’s) and YouTube sensation turned boxer, Jake Paul (12W-1L-0D 7KO’s) and I ask, is this career suicide for the once promising Joshua?
I ask this for a few different reasons, but mainly because Jake Paul’s events are regarded as a circus or pro wrestling episode.
I personally don’t mind Jake Paul’s staged-ish bouts because there are “real” boxers on the undercard that are given a platform for them to display their skills. Others deem his events as nothing more than a sport fueled soap opera, which I can’t completely defend.
Jake Paul started his boxing career facing non-boxers like MMA’s Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren, and NBA’s Nate Robinson, but began fighting actual boxers like Tommy Fury, which he suffered his first and only loss to.
To be honest, the look of his events has become more of a traditional boxing show, outside of the spectacle of his opposition like a 58-year-old Mike Tyson or a mega underachiever Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, but Joshua will be the most complete boxer he’ll face, so it will definitely be a great test for him, but Joshua has nothing to achieve in this match.
If Joshua wins, people will say he was meant to, and if he loses, he will be the laughing stock of the sport, so why would he take this match, other than the millions he stands to gain?
I get why people fight Paul, I probably would too if I needed the cash, but the people who fight Jake Paul gives me the same vibe I get when I see music artists that start doing reality TV; their careers are usually dwindling or dead so they settle on what they can get.
If this fight goes through, I can’t really see Joshua being taken serious afterwards, and maybe he doesn’t care because he has checked out somewhat, maybe he has lost faith in himself and just want to do a few money grabs before he hangs the gloves up for good, who knows.
What I do know is there is nothing career worthy that will come out of this fight with Jake Paul, even he obliterates him, because most hardcore fans view Paul as a YouTuber and nothing more.
Maybe I’m missing something, an angle I’m not seeing, but from where I’m sitting, this is a bad move for his boxing career if he plans to try and make it back to the top, but if he’s done with the legacy part of his journey, this isn’t a bad way to go.
