Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. retains title
EL PASO, Texas — Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. recovered from a slow start he blamed on leg cramps and stopped Andy Lee at 2:21 of the seventh round Saturday night to retain the WBC middleweight title.
A right uppercut by Chavez snapped Lee’s head upwards and sideways, and Chavez connected on a barrage of punches before referee Laurence Cole intervened and waved an end to the fight.More info.
The fight seemed as if there was going to be stiff competition all the way to the end while Lee kept throwing his jab keeping Chavez at a distance in the first and the second, but who knew Chavez was having leg cramps? At the end Lee said that Chavez was big and his punches were not moving him, which is why he probably bailed on the jab.
Chavez said he is ready to KO Sergio Martinez, which is a fight I hope gets made. This will be a great fight for both of them and one that could potentially truly put Chavez on the map. Before this fight, many have said that Chavez had been pampered, but hopefully this is the beginning of him taking steps in the right direction to proven he is as good as he thinks he is.
