Spence vs Crawford, Resume vs Resume

Errol Spence Jr is scheduled to put his undefeated record, and his IBF, WBA, and WBC welterweight titles against the undefeated WBO welterweight champ, Terence Crawford, who is also undefeated, on July 29th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This is a clash of the titans’ type of fight and the winner will become the undisputed champ with a possible claim at being the top P4P fighter in the world.

Both fighters are in their prime, are undefeated, and hold belts, so this has a throwback feel to it, like a Hagler vs Hearns clash. Whether it lives up to the hype, remains to be seen, but this is set to be one of the best fights in the last 20 years on paper, especially since it represents a scenario that is rarely seen in today’s protected boxing scene; the best doesn’t fight the best, unless one has lost a step or two.

The fight has been thrown around for the last 4 years or so, and most people who have an opinion on who they think would win, they talk about who has the better record, as if that will give some type of inclination as to who would win. I don’t believe this faulty theory, just like I’ve never believed the triangular theory…

Triangular Theory:

If fighter A beat fighter B, and fighter B beat fighter C, then that means fighter A will beat fighter C!

The triangular theory has been debunked over the years, but that’s for another article.

Since so many like to debate who has the better resume, I decided to put both fighters resume, starting in 2014, together and see if there is a clear-cut winner, in the resume challenge, at least.

To be honest, they both have similar resumes, as far as competition and win/loss of their opponents, but the one thing that stands out to me is the fighters they both fought. Shawn Porter and Kell Brook lost to both champions, which Crawford won in better fashion; he TKO’d Porter in the 10th and TKO’d Brook in the 4th, while Spence defeated Porter by split decision and TKO’d Brook in the 11th.

That being said, Spence fought both fighters before Crawford did; He fought Porter almost a year before Crawford and he fought Brook 4 years before Crawford, so it’s easy to assume both fighters were further from their primes when they fought Crawford than when they fought Spence.

Also, looking at Spence’s resume you see Mikey Garcia, Danny Garcia, and Yordenis Ugas on his list, which is arguably better opponents than anybody on Crawford’s list. Crawford’s best opponents would have to be the two fighters that I mentioned that were already defeated by Spence earlier, Porter and Brook, and Viktor Postol. I didn’t add Gamboa on the list because I never thought Gamboa had a shot in that fight; his style was tailor-made for Crawford

So, when glancing at both resumes, I would have to say Spence has fought the better competition, but this will not matter when they face each other at the end of July.

This fight will be for all the belts and legacy, so whoever wins will automatically have the better resume by adding the other person to their list!
