Thurman/Porter is off, so let the speculation fly!
It has been announced that the Keith Thurman vs Shawn Porter fight has been postponed due to an injury sustained to Thurman during an automobile accident. It has been said the injuries are not serious, but he will not be able to fight on the scheduled date, which is said to be rescheduled at some point. This is boxing, so as soon as this news was released, the speculation began to fly; everything from he’s faking it and is afraid of Porter, to there is something bigger being brewed behind the scenes. I’m not sure what truly happened, and speculation can sometimes be far-fetched, but what the hell, I’m going to speculate a little bit and see what my creative mind can come up with.
Ok, at first glance, maybe he was in an accident and did get injured; this is a feasible and logical scenario because people get into accidents all the time, but this is boring, so we’ll set this one to the side for now.
Could Thurman be slightly scared of Porter? I’m not talking in the fear sense like a person has when they realize that Donald Trump might become president, I mean in more of a what if fear. What if he does lose to Porter, what would that do to his career right now? What if he gets in there and doesn’t perform impressively and gets more scrutiny from the fans? A loss for Thurman, against the likes of Porter wouldn’t be career ending, but his ego would take a huge blow and that type of blow and I’m sure he feels that type of blow should come by the hands of a person that is above him in stature and it should be accompanied by a big payday. I’m not so sure if this would be enough for Thurman to pull off a Pacquio type of injury, because he seems to have a lot of confidence in himself, so I’m going to say no to this scenario, but you never know.
Now, the scenario that I think is more convincing, if there is any falsehood to the original reason is, what if Al Haymon has thought of something bigger. What if he has got word from Floyd Mayweather that he is definitely coming back to win his 50th fight, and he wants to make the show big; adding Thurman vs Porter on the undercard would make it more PPV friendly.
Like I said, the latter scenario seems more possible than the first one, but it could be that Thurman was truly in an accident and was injured. They say that he could resume training in the coming weeks, so it’s not pushing his fight readiness back too far, so it does align him for a showdown with Porter in May… If they wanted… If they wanted to combat the Khan vs Alvarez fight… Which has been declared Floyd day for a long time and Floyd is the type of person to do just that, no?
