Good Great Greatest: Josesito Lopez
Josesito Lopez has a record of 30 Wins, 18 by way of knock out, 4 Losses and no draws. He’s 28 years old and has spent most of his career as an unknown fighter. Outside of hardcore fans, no one really knew who Josesito was until after he beat undefeated Mike Dallas Jr, and even then he was virtually unseen, but he was looked at in a different light. He then lost to undefeated Jessie Vargas in his next fight pushing back into an opponent state, but where is he now on the Good Great Greatest scale?
Josesito has always been known for his punching power and his relentless fighting style, but not for being a super star on the rise. He lost his third pro fight, ran his largest win streak of 14 wins, and then lost again. It’s needless to say that Lopez was never really looked at as being the next best thing but maybe a good fight to get a fighter to the next step.
Josesito has recently gained some stardom by upsetting Victor Ortiz in a fight that Ortiz was supposed to win before going on to fight Saul Alvarez. Ortiz was winning the fight when Josesito broke his jaw which led him to quit in the 9th round. Lopez showed that he has heart and the will to win, which has pushed his stock up to a point where some believe that he might be able to go on and turn his career around. By around, I mean that he goes out and makes himself into a fighter that hangs around the top of his division.
I am a sucker for an underdog, but the underdog becoming a superstar??…that doesn’t happen often, and it doesn’t happen for a reason. I will not take away from any of Lopez’s accomplishments but I do not have to add to them because he upset a big upset fighter like Ortiz.
Analysis:
I like Josesito’s punching power and his non-stop fighting style that makes for great fights, but I believe he gets hit too much and if he fights a smart fighter, they will use his aggression against him. Everybody loves an all action fighter right? YES, especially a counterpunching opponent that has great poise and timing.
Potential:
Lopez has enough skills to make most fighters take him serious and prepare, but the top of the totem pole fighters will easily disperse of him by tapping in to his seemingly one dimensional forward fighting style. I look at him as a lower Good fighter right now with not much upside to it. Lopez could go on and pull off more upsets exposing fighters that have a weakness to his fighting style, but unless he strings these upsets in a row, he will only be able to rise to a middle or top good fighter. Lopez will forever be that gritty opponent that trainers put their fighters in with to make sure they are ready for the next level.
Lopez is scheduled to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on 09/15/12, in which he will be an underdog again. I’m not sure as to how good Alvarez is, but the world loves him and believes he’s the real deal, so if Lopez can somehow manage to sneak another upset win he will position himself to get bigger fights and maybe rise another career level. I’m not giving a prediction to the fight, but I think he has a tall order on Sept 15th that will either propel him into a fan favorite or push him back to a no name opponent that waits for other fighters to decide they want to fight him. Either way, Josesito is a low end Good fighter with a low chance of becoming anything higher.
