ALVAREZ DIDN’T LOOK GOOD, CHARLO LOOKED BAD!

Last Saturday (9/30/23), Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defeated Jermell Charlo by unanimous decision in a one-sided fight that failed to live up to the propaganda. If you watch the first 3 rounds, you can copy and paste them for the rest of the fight; Canelo pursued Charlo around the ring throwing loaded-up shots, landing some. Charlo landed punches far and in-between, but was really dormant for the majority of the fight.

This was supposed to be a volatile war between two undisputed champs but it was far from that. After the fight was over, and I revisited it a few days later, I realized that I got nothing from this fight at all!

This bout didn’t add, or take away, anything of substance to either fighter’s career. The way I see it, this fight shouldn’t have happened when it did for a few different reasons, but money is a great motivator to prize fighters, which is no surprise.

I don’t like excuses, and Charlo didn’t give any, but there could be a reason he was inactive in the fight and seemed to simply want to survive and not actually win the fight.

Coming off of hand surgery and being out of the ring for over a year should’ve/would’ve made most fighters take a tune up before they challenged one of the best fighters in the sport right now, but when you have the money in front of you, it’s hard to turn it down, especially with the way boxing is now; if he didn’t take the fight, there’s a great chance the fight wouldn’t have been made later.

For those that have ever seen Charlo fight before, we can all agree he was nowhere near his level of combat. And I know that styles make fights and maybe he didn’t fight the way he normally does because Canelo wouldn’t allow him to, but I don’t buy that because of the rare times during the fight when Jermell threw combos, he had success.

There’s not much more to say about the match other than, Alvarez is still on the back 9 of his career, yes, he is still dwindling and this is not a showing that he has some how turned back into the younger Canelo, this was just a displaying of a fighter that bit off more than he could chew.

I look forward to seeing them both fight again, but I hope Charlo gets back to his style of dominance and this isn’t a glimpse of him being a little gun-shy because of his hand injury, but if that is the case, he might want to start thinking about life after boxing.
