Martinez/Chavez Jr rematch…. For what?
Sergio Martinez defeats Julio Cesar Chavez Jr after a really lopsided fight. The only action was in the 12th and final round, but does it mean we need to see a rematch?
From round one, Sergio Martinez dominated by sticking and moving and then he stuck and moved, and then guess what? He did it again. This is what the fight mainly consisted of all the way to the 12th round. There was a punch landed by Chavez Jr here and there, but nothing of real value. Every time Chavez Jr decided he was going to setup, Sergio moved again.
Sergio is an elusive fighter that moves to one side or another making it hard for fighters to get set, and Chavez Jr could not adjust to this, nor did his corner have any answers. The crowd would start applauding every time he would catch Sergio on the ropes, and when Sergio let himself get caught on the ropes, but it was short lived and Sergio was still landing shots as well.
What I seen was an older fighter moving around the ring for 33 minutes non-stop, which would have tired many fighters way before round 12, but Sergio is in another category when it comes to his stamina. When he gets to the 12th round, he is still moving around the ring, but there are longer pauses after he throws punches.
Chavez Jr all of a sudden starts to land some great shots around 1 minute into the 12th round and he ends up knocking Martinez down, and the crowd goes wild! All he has to do is knock this guy out in the final round and he will display a similar situation his father was in when he fought Meldrick Taylor. Sergio gets off the canvas and continues to fight.
Any professional boxer, trainer, analyst, or human with a pulse, would have tried to tie Chavez Jr up after this knock down, but not Sergio. Sergio continued to fire back even though he was obviously still a little dazed, I think more tired than anything, but still somewhat dazed. He fought for the rest of the round taking shots and giving them to prove that he is a true warrior and without question, the true Middleweight champ.
I am hearing about a rematch that will probably take place in the Dallas Cowboys stadium in Texas!?! For what? Because of one round? Because of One flurry of punches on a tired fighter that dominated every round up to then?
Chavez did not wait until the 12th round to press the fight; he was not able to do so until the 12th round. Sergio would not stay where he was supposed to stay until the 12th round, until he was a little tired.
After the judges’ scorecards were revealed, a lot of people where glad that the judges got it right for a change, which I agree, so why taint this with a rematch in the state that is known for some of the worst bad calls in history? I would not fight in Texas, unless I was born and raised in Texas, it’s just not worth the risk. I’m not saying that every fight that has happened in Texas has ended with a bad call, sometimes they get it right (And sometimes that’s because the fighter they want to win actually wins, I’m just saying).
I see no reason for a rematch, and if I was Sergio and his corner, I would go on to add to my legacy, because he already proved he can beat the Cruiser weight sized Chaves Jr, why does he have to do it again?
