Alvarez is becoming a joke!

Saul Alvarez featured imageSaul “Canelo” Alvarez is a 22 year old up-and-coming fighter that is looking to have an explosive 2013 by battling top opposition, but who will he start off with?

He’s been ridiculed over the list of opponents he has defeated to reach his 41-0 record, and the most recent names added to this list were: the timeworn Shane Mosley, the wishful Josesito Lopez, and the disenchanting Kermit Cintron. None of these fighters were believed to have what it takes to beat him other than their personal families, friends, and some optimistic people.
I think he has received most of his criticism because Golden Boy, and others, is trying to add him amongst the names of the elite fighters of this period when he hasn’t proven it yet. He has shown that he has talents, but when you show them against inferior competition, your praise gets diminished, especially if it goes on for too long, and with a record of 41 fights, many are saying….it’s been too long. The bottom line is, the supporters will not be convinced until he gets in the ring with a valid challenger, so hopefully that happens this year.

Cotto TrainingThe plan they first had to get Alvarez more recognition was to have him fight Miguel Cotto on May 4th. This was seen as a good match when it was first talked about because Cotto had just come off a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr where even though he lost, he roughed Floyd up better than anyone has seen. The problem with this event is that Cotto truthfully is a small fighter at light middleweight, so he would have been at an immediate disadvantage. I won’t get into the fact that Cotto didn’t look good against Floyd, but Floyd actually just looked defective by putting his back to the ropes the whole night for whatever reason. That is a totally different story entirely, but it is still relevant enough to state because this added to the illusion that Cotto would have been a good opponent.

For this fight to happen Cotto had to get pass the undefeated Austin Trout, which I’m guessing many thought he would do…..even me. Austin Trout proved to be better than anyone gave him credit for as he out boxed the smaller Cotto to a unanimous decision. This definitely ruined their plans of the match, and it showed the world that Miguel is a deteriorating fighter that is no longer fighting at a champions level. Austin Trout won, so he should get the fight with Alvarez now, right?

cotto vs troutI have heard, what is just a rumor right now, that Alvarez told Golden Boy that they had to guarantee a fight with Mayweather for him to accept the fight against Trout!?! What? I don’t usually chime in on rumors, but this particular one came from a source that is pretty reliable, but I’ll wait until it fully comes out, but I hope it is just a rumor.

What is not a rumor is that they seem to be dragging their feet to make this fight against Trout a reality. I think this is the type of fight that Alvarez needs if he wants to confirm that he is as good as he/they want everyone to believe. Who’s better for him to fight right now? Austin Trout is undefeated and in his prime, he is a threatening fighter that has already defeated Alvarez’s brother, and to top it off..He Has A Belt!!

I’m not sure how this will pan out, but if he decides to fight another subpar opponent he will definitely not be seen as the next big thing until he mans up and puts it all on the line, because Alvarez is becoming a joke!
