May 5th: Cotto loses his belt… again!

Floyd Mayweather Jr. will face Miguel Cotto on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for Cotto’s WBA Super World Light Middleweight Title. I want to believe this will be a good, challenging fight and there will be a see-saw of action. But, me being a realist –I cannot. I do not see how Cotto will be able to make this fight challenging with his many disadvantages. I am not saying Cotto is a bad fighter, but he is not great enough to pull off what 42 other fighters have tried and failed at; which is to give Floyd Mayweather Jr. his first loss.

Miguel Cotto has a career that many boxers would kill to have. He’s been victorious over fighters like “Sugar” Shane Mosley and Zab Judah, and has given fighters like Carlos Quintana and Paul Malignaggi their first losses. He’s been a title holder four times in three weight divisions, and is known for his punching speed and accuracy with decent power. So, why is his chance so slim?

You ever heard the saying “It’s not you, it’s me”? This is a variation of what it means. Cotto will not lose this fight because he’s that bad, he will lose because Floyd is that good. Floyd has one of the fastest, if not the fastest, foot and hand speed combination right now. When coupled with his superb defense, it almost completely eliminates a win for Cotto.

I always do research before I come out and make a statement like this because I will definitely be questioned, or called insane. So, these are some of the reasons I feel the way I do:
[bullet_list icon=”rightarrow”]

  • Cotto is known for his hand speed, but Floyd is faster PERIOD!!
  • Cotto is known for his accuracy, but Floyd is more accurate PERIOD!!
  • Cotto does not have the best foot-work, which means he will be a sitting duck in there (he’s never been known for his defense)
  • Cotto needs his fighter to take risks, and we all know that Floyd simply does not take many, if any.

That being said, this is boxing, so Cotto will always have a puncher’s chance like Shane Mosley did, which is why I said “it almost completely eliminates a win for Cotto.”

This is not my official prediction, because maybe Cotto will show some new tactic as we get closer to May 5th. I might change my view from Floyd completely dominating to Floyd losing a round or two. Who knows?!
