Flashback: David Price is the next best thing at Heavyweight!
Do you remember David Price, the heavyweight prodigy, ESPN.com’s Prospect of the year in 2012 from Liverpool, UK? He was geared towards becoming the next best thing in a division that was, and still is, terribly vacant of talent. He came in and gained recognition by knocking off his opponents in spectacular fashion with a record of 15W-0L with 13KO’s until he faced the terrifying Tony “The Tiger” Thompson in February of 2013. Ok, Thompson is far from being terrifying but he disposed of Price in 2 rounds to make his rise to fame come to a screeching halt! This was indeed an upset, which most figured Price either had a bad day or underestimated the old mediocre Thompson, but that was not the case. Even though Price seemed to be more prepared for the rematch, he could only muster up enough determination to knock Thompson down in the 2nd round and outlast the first fight by 3 rounds; he was knocked out in the 5th round 5 months after their first fight in July of 2013.
David Price has since fell from the lime light and even though he has still been active, he hasn’t fought anyone of relevance since Thompson. He has fought 3 times this year and was set to battle Emilio Zarate (18W-13L-9KO’s) but just withdrew because of a bicep tear he sustained while sparring. And yes, his unknown opponent has 13 losses!
Price has only lost to Thompson but he has since been paired against garbage fighters, so has he and his team given up? I would think they would get him back on track by giving him some stiff competition, tailored to his skill set of course, and helping him deal with those 2 losses mentally. We will have o wait and see what plan they have for Price but right now it’s not looking too good. Hopefully they have an unseen plan for the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist and all this will become a bad memory. But until then, the best advice I can give is STAY AWAY FROM TIGERS, NO MATTER HOW OLD THEY ARE!!!
