Lennox Lewis was a great fighter!
If I told you that Lennox was a fighter that was great enough to hang with the best the heavyweight division has had to offer, would you call me crazy? How about if I told you that he was great enough to beat favorite heavyweight fighters in history like Muhammad Ali? Well…….I think he had enough skills to have defeated Ali and many other heavyweight greats!
I know, I know, Blasphemy right? Well let’s look at Lennox Lewis! Lennox was know for a great jab, which was strong enough to call a power punch, and he had accuracy better than any other fighter other than Floyd Mayweather……..Yes! His accuracy was up there with Floyd Mayweather Jr, who’s accuracy is better than everyone’s right? That’s another story and more research, but yes.. His accuracy is right there next to Floyd’s! This is a great attribute to have when talking about fighting an elusive fighter like Ali!
Lennox Lewis got with Emanuel Stewart and turned into a fighter that used his height and reach to defeat his opponents strategically. Yes he loss to Oliver McCall and Hassim Rahman, but look at both of those fights! Oliver McCall could have been a great fighter if his life outside the ring didn’t interfere! Hasim Rahman was not a great fighter, but Lennox Lewis was not at his best in this fight, which is his fault! He did not produce the jabs he usually does and he did not move like he usually did. Another thing about his 2 losses, he avenged both of them!
Many people want to discuss the fact that Lennox was losing on the scorecards to Vitali Klitschko in his last fight before he retired, but the fight was stopped due to a cut on Vitali’s eye. Vitali’s eye was cut due to the accuracy of Lennox’s punching! Vitali did win the early rounds but at the time of the stoppage, Lennox had gained momentum and was on his way to winning by KO in the later rounds if not by decision. This was also a fight that Lennox was not prepared for because he was supposed to fight Kirk Johnson, which is a much easier opponent, but agreed to fight Vitali! In that move he displayed heart and continued to fight any and all opponents!
Lennox ducked no one in his career but was ducked by Mike Tyson and Riddick Bowe, that I know of. He defeated Riddick Bowe in the 1988 Olympics, which is why Riddick most likely did not want to fight him again, and he eventually fought Mike Tyson and KO’d him. Mike Tyson was over the hill at that point in his career, but who knows how the fight would have went if they fought before Tyson went to jail? Who knows how the Tyson vs Holyfield fight would have went before Tyson went to jail…..Think about that one?
Lewis has shown that he had the will to win and the ability to fight the best, and his skill set proved to be dominating among the great fighters of his era. There is no reason to believe that he would not have dominated if he fought in any era of boxing. His determination would have been a strong entity against anyone he faced. I recently had a boxing fan tell me that Muhammad Ali would have found a way to win, and I agree that it could have happened, but I also replied “I’m sure Lennox would have found a way to win the rematch!!”
