P4P Lists Are Sh*t Right Now!
Now that the P4P king Floyd “Money” Mayweather has retired, again, we are left with a lot of hopes and dreams that has been taking a long time to come to fruition. I’m not talking about how Floyd carried the sport or anything like that, I’m talking about the abundance of fighters that are unproven but are labeled as one of the best out. There are many mirages in the game right now; this includes GGG down to old man Cotto.
If you ask somebody who the best boxer is right now, you will hear names like Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Sergey Kovalev, Keith Thurman, etc. These are fine names, and they are all definitely on the rise, but I guarantee that once they began fighting heavier competition, this list will get thinned out like spandex on a fat chick… I’m talking see through thin! Depending on who you talk to and who they’re a fan of, they’ll give you an excuse as to why they believe their fighter has proven himself or why it’s evident that he has the goods, but don’t be fooled, because I can build up or tear down any fighter new or old, it’s all about the angle you’re looking at. The angle I’m talking about is the same angle that was used to make people believe that Alvarez had a shot against Floyd, the same angle that made people believe in Michael Grant when he faced Lennox Lewis, THAT SAME ANGLE THAT MADE YOU SIT IN FRONT OF YOUR TV AND ROOT FOR LUCIAN BUTE WHEN HE FOUGHT CARL FROCH, you get the picture, but I’ve digressed.
If you look at these so called prodigies records and gage their competitions talent level, you would have to be naïve to believe that they have been pushed to the limit. Thurman has fought no one of significance outside of them having a good name to place on his resume of defeated fighters, and this is true with all the rest. GGG has fought some known fighters, Rubio, Stevens, Geale, Murray, Rosado, Macklin, and a few others. Impressive? Not really! These fighters were picked because they had names and had minimal chance of defeating him because of the matchup. All promoters do this, but he is really using this tactic to his advantage and people are eating it up so much that he’s number two on some websites P4P list. REALLY, Number 2? For beating feather fist Willie Monroe Jr perhaps?
I’m going to switch gears for a second and talk about the future hall of famer Miguel Cotto. I’m going to just blurt it out, Miguel Cotto is old! He has been for years now, but many believe he has had some run in with the fountain of youth because he beat a crippled Sergio Martinez. This is that angle I was talking about; Sergio was one of the best before he was injured, even though he already had signs of slowing down, and when he was faced with Cotto, people believed he would win it easily, but it was the other way around. So now that Cotto demolished Martinez, who was stripped of his greatest asset (His movement), the energy or limelight transferred to Cotto, but it’s a bunch of bull. Cotto is still old, he just ran into someone worse off than him.
Like I said in the beginning, there are some out of this group that will emerge as a great but it won’t be all of them, and it probably won’t be who you think it will be. A lot will turn into underachievers who are exciting to watch like Andre Berto and others will become gate keepers that can push people to the limit but can’t win the big fights like Zab Judah.
If I offended anybody, GOOD, hopefully you’ll look at your favorite fighter with an objective eye and see what they’re really made of and stop believing the hype. I am curious to see who will be the next great talent and PPV giant that emerge out of this crowd and I’m an optimistic person and hope they all become greats but I’m also a realist and know that 90% of them will face their first defeat when they fight a person that is on the level they believe they are already on… Watch!
