Pacquio vs Algieri this Saturday
This Saturday Philippine sensation Manny Pacquio (56W-5L-38KO’s) will climb in the ring and battle with the underdog Chris Algieri (20w-0L-8KO’s) in Macao, China for the WBO welterweight title, which will air on HBO PPV. Pacquio is the favorite in the fight but Algieri has gained some believers over the last few months.
Algieri, a 30 year old native of Huntington, NY, is coming off the biggest fight of his career against Ruslan Provodnikov in June of this year. Ruslan dropped Algieri twice in the first round, which made it seem like it was going to be an easy night for the Russian, but Algieri had other plans; he became more elusive and started punching with precision and won by split decision upsetting Provodnikov in beautiful fashion. But can he do it against one of the best fighters of this era?
Manny Pacquio has faded in the past few years and seems to continue to be on a downward slope, but he still remains dangerous and better than most people in their prime.
The one thing that Manny Pacquio has that Provodnikov doesn’t is movement. Once Algieri found his range against Provodnikov, Provodnikov had no plan B and became a stationary target moving only forward. That won’t be the case with Pacquio that moves as good as the best of them.
I’m always a sucker for an underdog story but Algieri is going to have to fight his a** off if he wants to continue his winning streak, and Pacquio is going to have to be Pacquio if he wants to get to fights with the likes of Amir Khan, which he has been stated as saying.
I’m not sure who wins this, but I’m sure it will be a good one. The fight airs this Saturday on HBO PPV, tune in!
