What if Juan Manuel Marquez Did Win?
Anybody that has ever watched anything that was decided by a judge knows there is going to be controversy. Judgments are controversial in nature because they are opinions that are ultimately given as law or fact. If you watch a singing competition, the judge or judges may decide to eliminate a singer that you think should’ve won the entire competition, but since they are the judges, what they say goes. I’m not even going to get into the court room, but you should get the point.
After watching Juan Manuel Marquez vs Manny Pacquio 3, which many believe Marquez won, including me, what would have happened if they did give the decision to Marquez? What would have happened after that? I’m not going to get into the corruption of boxing judges – not in this post anyways – but I have sat back and thought about how much excitement there would not be right now, which means less money for a lot of people.
Think about this for a second… if Marquez beats Manny Pacquio, the whole Floyd vs Manny loses luster. All Manny’s fights lose luster, for that matter, and that’s if he doesn’t retire and focus 100% on politics. We would now have Juan Manuel Marquez positioned higher on the leader board, and he doesn’t sell tickets like Manny. He’s already lost to Floyd Mayweather in a way that a rematch would be a giant F-U to the fans, and the people that would make sense for him to fight would not be PPV material.
I like Marquez, and I think he is a great fighter, but him losing is better for the sport. I am not saying in any shape or form that judges should score any fight incorrectly. I am saying that since they scored it incorrectly, the sport is better off. I’m sure when scorecards are way off, unlike the one we are speaking of, they are done that way to put more money in the promoters pockets. But, I think this one works for a bigger cause whether they meant to do it or not.
